Cordyceps is a fungus which appears annually that grows parasitically on ghost moth larvae. It normally inhabits the larvae in winters and forms fruiting body in summers justifying its name as “winter-worm summer-grass” (冬蟲夏草) It is also known as Chinese caterpillar fungus.

There are hundreds of species of Cordyceps. Two species of Cordyceps mushroom most widely used and valued in traditional Asian medical practice are C.sinensis and C.militaris. C.sinensis is found to grow naturally in the wild in high altitude mountainous regions of Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Tibet (China) whereas C.militaris is artificially cultivated under controlled laboratory conditions.

Cordyceps found in supplements are usually of the C. militaris species as nature’s cordyceps ( C.sinensis) are becoming more expensive due to its scarcity as a result of harvesting challenges. Cordyceps as a TCM herb was in focus during the Chinese National Games in 1993, when a group of women athletes broke nine world records on the basis of taking cordyceps regularly while they were in training.

Cordyceps has a long history of use as a lung and kidney tonic in TCM and for the treatment of chronic bronchitis, asthma, tuberculosis and sexual dysfunction. It is also known as “Himalayan Viagra” due to its stamina-boosting value.

TCM herbs like cordyceps are not going to bring you immediate relief of your health conditions. The curative process of herbal medicine is like cultivating a garden. You will only see changes over the course of months or seasons as you attend to the health of the soil and pay attention to the overall ecosystem. Having said that, why not try out the Pure Cordyceps capsules from Eu Yang Sang Singapore over a few months and feel its power.
