“An apple a day helps keep the doctor away” is a great motto for your physical wellness. The apple is rich in fiber and antioxidants. It is the favourite fruit of ancient Greeks and Romans. There are over 7000 known cultivars of apple, boasting a great diversity of colour, shape, size and taste. It is a great source of pectin, the prebiotic which is good for your gut health. Quercetin, a flavonoid found in apples, protects neurons from oxidative damage. Two-thirds of the fiber and antioxidants is found in the peel of the apple; so it is best to eat the whole apple with the skin. The Public Health Nutrition publication reported that eating apples regularly is associated with reduced risks for some types of cancers including colorectal cancer and breast cancer. Apple is also linked to reduced risks of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. The good news is that the apple provides so many health benefits for such a low price when compared to fruits like strawberries and durians. So why not make it part of your life.
